Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about importing your vehicle to Spain.

⚖️ Legal Requirements

Non-residents can drive on UK plates for up to 6 months. If you're a Spanish resident, you have just 30 days to re-register your vehicle. During this time the car must remain taxed, MOT'd, and insured in the UK.
No, but you do need proof of address in Spain (a rental contract, escritura, or padrón certificate) and an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero).
No. A rental contract or padrón certificate from your local town hall is sufficient proof of address.
You face fines of up to €6,000, and your vehicle can be confiscated. The Guardia Civil has access to the DVLA database and actively checks UK-registered vehicles.

💰 Costs & Payment

It depends on your vehicle's value and CO2 emissions. Registration tax ranges from 0% to 14.75% of the vehicle value. Our service fee is a flat rate that covers everything. See our full pricing breakdown →
No. We take a small deposit to start the process, with further payments becoming due as taxes are calculated and paid. You're never asked for the full amount upfront.
Absolutely not. We quote a fixed price upfront that covers our entire service. All government taxes and fees are itemised separately so you know exactly where every euro goes.

🔧 The Import Process

Typically 3-4 weeks from start to finish. We manage the entire timeline and keep you informed at every stage.
The ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) is Spain's equivalent of the UK MOT. For imported vehicles, the test is more thorough than a standard annual ITV — it checks everything from emissions to chassis numbers. Learn more about the ITV test →
You have 60 days to fix any issues, and the retest is free within that period. We'll arrange repairs through our trusted local garages if anything comes up.
Most UK right-hand-drive vehicles need headlight realignment to pass the Spanish ITV import test. We can realign virtually all headlight types — including LED and Xenon — at our workshop, usually for far less than the cost of replacement units. Learn more about headlamp realignment →
Since Brexit, UK-registered vehicles are treated as non-EU imports and typically require a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or equivalent engineering report. We handle this as part of our service.

📄 Documents

You'll need your V5C (logbook), valid passport or ID, NIE certificate, proof of Spanish address, and current UK insurance documents. We'll give you a complete checklist and guide you through getting anything you're missing.
You can apply for a replacement from the DVLA — it typically takes 4-6 weeks by post. We can advise you on the fastest route to get a replacement.

🇪🇸 After Import

Road tax in Spain (IVTM — Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica) is paid annually to your local town hall (ayuntamiento). Rates vary by municipality and vehicle power. It's generally much cheaper than UK road tax. Learn more about road tax →
Vehicles up to 4 years old: no ITV required. From 4 to 10 years: every 2 years. Over 10 years: annually. This is the same as the standard Spanish ITV schedule.
Once your vehicle is on Spanish plates, you'll need Spanish insurance. We can help arrange competitive quotes — Spanish insurance often works out cheaper, and it typically covers any driver over 25 without needing named drivers.
